AI-enhanced smart glasses to assist the visually impaired in navigating their surroundings with greater ease.

Goitseone Carol Matsididi, co-founder of the Elayna Zahra Research Lab, is one of the innovative minds behind Project ReVision.

Launched in 2018, the project was inspired by the experiences Goitseone and her partner encountered during their university years. While Goitseone volunteered with visually impaired students, her partner cared for his grandmother, who was blind.

They often engaged in deep conversations about “how technology could enhance their experiences.” By merging their diverse perspectives and insights, they recognized that technology could serve as a “bridge for independence, connectivity, and accessibility.” This realization led to the creation of Project ReVision, an AI-powered smart glasses solution designed to assist the visually impaired in reading, navigating, and connecting with their surroundings more effortlessly.

“What started as a wild idea born out of love and shared dreams has grown into a structured plan and a prototype that brings us closer to a launchable device every day,” says Goitseone.

Now deeply involved in development, they are rigorously testing and refining their prototypes to ensure they address real-world needs. Goitseone is convinced that this initiative has the potential to empower thousands in Botswana and, eventually, millions around the globe once completed.

Currently, Project ReVision employs six interns funded by the government, including two software developers, two electronic engineers, and two specialists in 3D and industrial engineering. Goitseone was quoted saying, “The support of YALI has been a cornerstone in this journey, giving us access to mentors, resources, and a community as passionate as we are. Thanks to YALI, this vision has become grounded in possibility and structure, propelling us forward to the day we’ll launch Project ReVision, a project that we hope opens doors and expands horizons for those who deserve a world as vast as their dreams.”
